The Town of Kirkland Police Department was started in 1975 as a part time rural patrol to service the Township of Kirkland. The department began with a few part time officers who worked evenings and weekends. The department was disbanded and reorgainzed in 1977. At this time there was a separate police department for the Village of Clinton which operated with two full time and a few part time officers. In 1994 the Village Police Department disbanded and integrated with the Town Police.

The Department patrols the 38 square miles of the Town 24 hours a day. This includes the Village of Clinton,hamlets of Clark Mills and Franklin Springs, and all areas in between.
Programs/Activities:
Vacation residence checks, crime prevention, operation ID of personal property, DARE and Juvenile Aide Programs, Neighborhood Watch programs, bicycle registration.
